DU set to introduce new courses but has no teachers

Already facing scarcity of teachers, the new courses of the Delhi University (DU), which are set to be started from the 2016-17 session, would add more burdens as various colleges under the (DU) are going to start new courses. The initiative will add 2,000 more students but there seem to be not much focus on hiring teachers for the new courses as well as for the existing one.

According to the experts and teachers of the Delhi University (DU), the shortage of teachers needs to be sorted out before initiating new courses. In absence of the appropriate numbers of teachers, the quality of education is being compromised.

As per an estimate, around 4,000 permanent teacher’s posts are lying vacant for years.

University teachers have been demanding for fresh appointment in the various colleges for posts ranging from principals to teachers. “The previous V-C, professor Dinesh Singh, took three years to initiate the recruitment and formed a selection committee to look into the matter of appointment but the newly appointed V-C scrapped the selection committee without setting a time frame for the appointment of a new committee,” Abha Dev Habib, an EC member of DU said.

“Scraping of the committee appointed for the selection of teachers is byproduct of growing lobbyism and nepotism in the university. The current V-C, Professor Yogesh Tyagi, must initiate to appoint new committee ensuring the fairness,” Habib added.

Prestigious colleges of DU, including Hindu, Hansraj, Kirori Mal and Sri Ram College of Commerce at present don’t have a regular principal.
