DU finds it difficult to prosecute poll norms flouters for loopholes

Delhi University administration is hapless before political aspirants in the campus as they are using loopholes of election norms to duck the penalties ordered by the National Green Tribunal for using printed posters for campaigning in students’ union elections. The campus is packed with colorful printed posters and pamphlets but the administration is finding it difficult to take action due to the loopholes in the election norms.

“As of now, we are not able to take action against those who are using papers because the students’ bodies have not declared their final candidates. Once the candidates are finalized we will be able to prosecute them,” said.

In this context, DU administration has also requested Delhi Police to impound cars running in groups with posters pasted on the cars. Administration on Thursday had also written to the Municipal Corporations of Delhi and Delhi Police commissioner Alok Verma to take strict action against those indulging in defacement of public property ahead of the varsity’s student union polls.

Meanwhile, the students’ wings of various political parties have intensified their campaign. AISA on Thursday organised a hunger strike at Faculty of Arts to demand hostel accommodations for all students. While other groups have intensified canvassing votes mainly through using pamphlets and sticking posters on campus walls.

NGT on July 18 had ordered DU to restrict sticking posters at only certain notified places on the campus.
