DU council clears 4-yr programme

The academic council of Delhi University at the time of going to press on Wednesday had cleared curriculum of all 63 proposed courses for the four-year-degree for the undergraduate classes to be introduced from July this year. The academic council has been holding marathon deliberations for the past two days to clear curriculum prepared by different departmental committees. Opposition to the proposal in the council was limited to the notes of dissent registered by 10-odd teachers’ representatives belonging to outfits affiliated to different Left parties.

The high point of Wednesday's development was the introduction of a full length paper on Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar in the discipline for Political Science under the four-year undergraduate programme. Academic council member Rajesh Jha said, 'Inclusion of chapters on Babasaheb in the curriculum will help the students draw inspiration from the great scholar who had made great contribution in structuring the Indian Constitution.'

SK Sagar, another member of the Academic council informed, 'The foundation course got the green signal late in the night, at approximately 9:15 pm, after a long debate with overwhelming support in the AC meeting. DU in its curriculum has given 67 per cent of weightage to the foundation course in the first year of its four-year degree programme.'

Jha added, 'There were over 100 members present at the historic session of the council'. The Academic council is meeting to assess the course syllabus recommended by the Standing Committee two days back. The Academic council is the highest body which gives the stamp of approval to academic matters of the university.

A member of the Academic council, who sought anonymity, said 'Whereas the whole house welcomed the paper on Babasaheb Ambedkar, the teachers from the Democratic Teachers Front (an affiliate to CPM) registered dissent.' The courses passed earlier in the day included M tech in Computer Science, Mathematics, Discipline Course (DC) II of Operational Research and Statistics, DC III of African Studies, DC II of East Asian Studies, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Social Work, Commerce, Management Studies and Music.

When the Economics syllabus was being discussed, the Dean, faculty of Social Science, Anita Sharma expressed anguish over the way some teachers treated her in faculty meeting. She shared that all courses were discussed thoroughly, but two-three teachers who dissented in the meeting came to her and asked her if she understood the language of dissent.

'Those members also tried to hijack the meetings,' said Sharma. The house took serious view of it and passed a resolution condemning the behaviour of the teachers.

According to sources, 'The Commerce courses were passed in the Academic council meeting with a rider that within a year the revised syllabus may be submitted.'

Incidentally during the course of the meeting a Left-aligned teacher confessed that the 'the new four year course introduces interdisciplinary pedagogy and enhances the quality of education and impart employable skills to the students.'
