DU college, operating from school building, to have new campus soon

‘The plan for an eight-storied building in Rohini Sector 16 has been finalised. The foundation stone for the campus will be laid tomorrow (Wednesday) and it is expected to be operational by 2016 session,’ said college principal Poonam Verma.

The prestigious college, funded by the Delhi government, has been operating from a government school building since its establishment in 1987. Currently, around 1,200 students are enrolled in the five courses offered by the college. The campus plan includes 60 state-of-art classrooms and separate hostel for boys and girls, a facility which is available in limited off-campus colleges of the varsity.

According to the Principal, due to lack of infrastructure it has been difficult to introduce new courses in the college. ‘At present the college offers Bachelor in Business Studies, Bachelor in Fine Arts and Computer Science courses. But once the new campus becomes operational, the number of professional courses offered will increase and students will have more options,’ she said. The budget for the new campus is estimated to be around Rs 130 crore. Besides the basement, the eight story building will also have a 500-seater amphitheater, 400-seater auditorium, six computer labs and a library with capacity of over 50,000 books. The campus which will be built according to the ‘green building’ concept will also have arrangements for rain water harvesting, recycling waste water and sewage treatment plant.
