DU admissions to begin from 1 July

In the 12-member Principals’ Committee which was formed by Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh on Friday, it was decided that admissions in University of Delhi will begin from 1 July. ‘There will be a meeting of principals of colleges on 30 June to decide the cut off list. It is expected that eight cut off lists will be taken out for this academic session. Admission is most likely to begin from 1 July,’ said a principal of a DU college.

Earlier in the day, Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) was officially scraped by University of Delhi. In the Academic Council meeting held in the morning, ‘out of 71 members, only six dissented. The resolution to scrape FYUP was passed,’ said a source.

‘According to UGC directive, FYUP was rolled back. It was done in just few minutes. There was no discussion. No agenda was given how the shift from FYUP to three year undergraduate programme. Because of such political pressure under which FYUP is scrapped, few professors resigned,’ said Rajesh Jha, member of Academic Council, DU.

In the Executive Council meeting that followed the academic council meeting, ‘Out of 18 members, only two dissented. The resolution was passed easily,’ said a source. ‘This is total sell out to private universities. DU has surrendered its autonomy. This is the most unfortunate time in university’s period. If a university can’t decide its curriculum, then what is left for the university?’ said Aditya Mishra, member of Executive Council, DU. On 27 June, the Vice Chancellor issued a statement to roll back FYUP and asked principals of various colleges to start admission for the session 2014 under the three year undergraduate programme.

The decision had put an end to the logjam in which DU was stuck from a certain period of time. Over 2.7 lakh students have applied for admission to more than 54,000 seats in 64 colleges of the university.
