DTU VC under the scanner on corruption charges

The committee has been constituted under former chief secretary R Narayana Swami, Retd IAS GS Patnaik and principal and education secretary Arindo Majumdar.

LG Najeeb Jung has ordered Delhi Technology University vice chancellor PB Sharma to go on leave pending inquiry into charges of corruption against him.

According to DTU sources, ‘The case is related to the recruitment process in 2012. Vacancies were advertised in December 2011 and the selection took place in 2012. There were many irregularities and people who did not even fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria were screened, allowed to appear for interview and were even selected,’ the Engineering Teachers’ Association said in a statement.

At the time, the teacher’s body had also raised their voice against these appointments. However former chief secretary PK Tripathi, who worked under the former Sheila Dikshit-led government, had suppressed these issues.

‘Another former chief secretary DM Spolia had earlier recommended an inquiry against PB Sharma, but former chief minister Sheila Dikshit had settled the issue,’ said DTU’s Staff Association.

DTU’s teachers’ body had earlier made representations to the Delhi government under Sheila Dikshit, alleging irregularities in recruitment. They also raised the issue of the appointment of the Pro VC. The teachers had accused Sharma of resorting to a pick and choose policy in the appointment and removal of department heads.

‘Before start an inquiry process, PB Sharma has been asked to proceed on medical leave as the department plans to probe the allegations against him,’ said Delhi secretariat official.
