The Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) has started an emergency restoration system (ERS) to ensure uninterrupted power supply during emergencies. Sometimes transmission lines get damaged due to unexpected situations such as heavy storms or accident etc. It takes a long time to repair transmission towers in case of damages. Since the transmission lines are used for the bulk supply of power, its damage affects a large area.
With the introduction of the emergency restoration system a single tower structure will be erected and the transmission lines will pass through this tower till the time the main tower is completely repaired.
DTL chairman and managing director Shakti Sinha said, 'This is first time in Delhi that the emergency restoration system has been used. With the introduction of this system, DTL will, in any unforeseen emergency, be able to restore power in the shortest possible time.'
Sinha further added that on 6 June a 220KV tower of Bawana in Rohini collapsed due to heavy winds and the power supply to some of the North Delhi areas was affected.
Though, the affected areas were backfeeded from other sources but the hindrance in Bawana – Rohini 220KV line was putting pressure on the power system. DTL using the ERS erected a tower and re-energized it in less than 24 hours and the essential supply to the water works and other installations was restored.
