DTC issues notice to DIMTS over stolen GPS from buses

After reports of missing of GPS devices from the buses plying mainly on BRT corridors, the DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) has issued a notice to DIMTS, a company which is responsible for upkeep and maintenance of the device.

The DTC, in its notice, also raised questions over poor maintenance of electronic equipment in its buses and stations such errors in LED boards installed at various bus shelters on BRT stretches to provide information.

As per reports, more than 1,800 GPS (global positioning system) devices were reported to be stolen from buses in last three-and-a-half years. The GPS is currently installed in 3,800 DTC buses. Sources have claimed that drivers could be behind this because if a GPS device works properly, movement of the bus can easily be tracked by control room set up at Millennium Depot.

The DTC officials said that the department has taken the matter seriously and is waiting for the reply of DIMTS. The officials, however, refused to comment on who is behind all this. They also admitted that devices are not only missing but hundreds of them are not even working properly due to zero maintenance by the operator. The officials claimed that it is the DIMTS which should take

responsibility as transport department had chosen DIMTS for its upkeep and maintenance. ‘We had just installed the devices but another company had to maintain it. We have taken the matter seriously as it is related to public transport,’ said RS Minhas, spokesperson of DTC.

As per direction of Delhi government, the DTC had installed GPS devices in 3,800 buses, including AC and non-AC buses with an aim to improve bus service ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Corporation had also installed passenger information systems (LED) boards at 90 bus shelters across the national capital in order to track bus operation and to inform commuters about the location of buses.
