DTC crushes septuagenarian to death

A low-floor Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus crushed a 75-year-old cyclist to death while injuring six other people plying on a cycle-rickshaw in Vikaspuri on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Kapil Dev Sharma. He was riding on a bicycle  around 9.30 am when a DTC bus, plying on route number 835 between Jaffarpur Kalan and Tilak Nagar, hit him and two cycle-rickshaws carrying five persons plying on the road near Uttam Nagar red light.

The six others who were injured were identified as Jagdish Sharma, Dileep, Naveen, Nitin, Naresh and Sheela. They have been admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) hospital, police said.

Apparently, the brakes of the bus failed, due to which the driver lost control on the vehicle while taking a turn on a red light. 'The driver took a left turn to avoid the accident but failed,' said an eye witness.

'A case has been registered and the driver, identified as Surender Sharma, has been arrested,' said a police officer.
