DTC bus runs over 11-yr-old, mob vandalises 12 vehicles

Following the incident, residents staged a protest and set the bus ablaze and also vandalised 12 other vehicles, evoking tension in the area.
The incident took place at around 10.30 am when the victim, identified as Amit (11) was going to school. He was a resident of JJ Colony in Khanpur and at the time of the incident he was crossing the road. According to the victim’s family, Amit used to go to Madangiri Government school, with his elder sister but on Friday he went alone to give his final examination.
“Amit was crossing the road at Khanpur red light and in the meantime, an AC DTC bus took a right turn from the signal itself. The driver, later identified as Vikram (34), was unable to see the child and the bus ran over him. He immediately applied brakes and came out of the bus to see the condition of the child. Meanwhile, the passengers of the bus and the locals nabbed the driver and thrashed him,” a police officer close to investigation said.
One of the locals made a call to the police control room and a team reached the spot. The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. In the meantime, following the incident, locals gathered at the spot and demonstrated against the errant driver.
According to the police, the residents set the bus on fire and also vandalised 12 other vehicles. A large unit of the police force was deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation.
Meanwhile, a case under the Section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 A
(causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Ambedkar Nagar police station against the errant driver.
Delhi govt announces Rs 5 lakh compensation to victim’s family
The Delhi Government on Friday announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of 11-year-old boy who was crushed to death by a DTC bus at South East Delhi’s Khanpur area. The Delhi government also announced an inquiry into the matter, which will be conducted by transport minister Gopal Rai.
“Transport department will ascertain the cause of negligence and will take action against the driver after the detailed report,” Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said while addressing a press conference at Delhi Secretariat. “It is a very sad incident. We couldn’t compensate their loss but government has announced to give Rs 5 lakh as financial assistance to the family,” Sisodia said.
