Drunk Russian diplomat hits biker and injures him, assaults a cop

A speeding car of a Russian Embassy diplomat allegedly hit a motorcycle injuring the biker, then rammed into a police barricade and the diplomat later assaulted a police official in South Delhi’s Moti Bagh area on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

The incident took place at around 1.30 am when the diplomat, said to be in an inebriated condition, hit a bike with his car from behind and then rammed into a police barricade before stopping the car. However, the medical examination of the diplomat will ascertain if he was drunk at the time of the incident, police said.

The diplomat identified as Dmitry Kryukov, posted as First Secretary at the Russian Embassy was returning home when the accident took place. He lost control of the vehicle and hit the rear side of the motorcycle, police said.

The biker, identified as Naveen fell on the ground after the collision. He sustained injuries and was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. When the police intervened in the matter and asked the diplomat to come out of his white color sedan car, bearing a registration number pertaining to the Russian Embassy, he refused. “The diplomat was injured too. He received injuries on his nose. When the police official who reached the spot asked him to come out of the car, he started arguing with the police. When the officials finally managed to pull the diplomat out of the vehicle, it emerged that the diplomat was injured too. He continued arguing with the police and allegedly assaulted a constable who was on duty,” the official added. Senior police officers from the concerned district confirmed that a case of rash driving, obstructing a public servant from performing duty and assaulting the public servant in connection with the incident has been registered but given the diplomatic immunity enjoyed by the embassy official, any further action would have to wait for instructions from higher ups including Union ministries of Home and External Affairs.

The matter was immediately communicated to the concerned embassy through proper channels and a person was sent to escort the diplomat back to his residence after basic medical treatment, police said.
