A 45-year-old drunk man was arrested for firing in the air near the office of a Congress legislator here on Tuesday morning.
The firing was reported approximately at 11.20 am. from west Delhi's Pitampura area. The man who opened fire has been identified as Ravinder Yadav.
‘Yadav arrived at the office of Tri Nagar MLA Anil Bhardwaj and started shouting in filthy language. When some Congress workers told him to not use such words, he came out of the office and started firing in the air ,’ said a police officer.
No one was injured in the firing, the officer said. ‘The accused, who was found to be drunk at the time of the incident, has been arrested and is being interrogated,’ added the officer.
Bhardwaj said that the accused was a not a party member and not known to him. ‘Congress party workers gather at my officer every Tuesday and Saturday. The accused entered the office when such a gathering was on and started using derogatory words. Party workers tried to stop him, but he continued. He then went out and fired six rounds of bullets in the air,’ the MLA said.
The incident created a furore in the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday. Senior Congress MLA, Mukesh Sharma, demanded a debate in the House on the deteriorating law and order situation in the national capital. There were cries that the proceedings of the House should be adjourned till the Delhi police commissioner came to the Assembly and addressed the members’ security concerns. The leader of the House, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the leader of the Opposition, Prof. Vijay kumar Malhotra, were of the same opinion, but the commissioner could not come, as he was attending a meeting of the Parliament Consultative Committee. Amid sporadic protests, the House was adjourned till Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar came.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit stated that it was necessary for all citizens, including elected representatives and especially the women to feel secure in the national capital and the police should work in this direction. She assured the members that the sentiments of the House would be communicated to the union home minister, adding all members of the House, cutting across party lines, were united in their condemnation of the shoot out at MLA Bhardwaj’s office.
Dikshit further stated that there have been incidences of attacks on MLAs, such as Bharat Singh and Jaswant Singh, in the past. The city government had raised the matter with the union home minister. The Chief Minister had earlier also written to the home minister requesting proper security cover for MLAs, But the union government had expressed its inability to do so stating that the situation in Delhi does not necessitate such deployment.
