The NDMC officials said that they have envisaged a wi-fi corridor which will ensure seamless connection to the travellers in its area. Apart from this, the civic agency plans to replace 18,500 street-light poles in its areas with ‘NextGen digital poles’ which will be fitted with wi-fi access points, LED bulbs and CCTV cameras which, it claims will be the first-of-its kind initiative in the world.
The estimated project cost, based on PPP mode, is pegged at Rs 220 crore, is likely to be fully commissioned within three years. An MoU was also signed with Indus Towers Limited for the project in the presence of Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung at Raj Niwas on Wednesday.
“On arrival at IGI airport, a traveller wants to send messages and emails to connect with family members. Regrettably the half-an-hour journey from the airport is known for bad signals and dropped calls. So, we envisaged a roadside based wi-fi corridor to ensure seamless connectivity for the 20-30 minute journey till CP.
“NDMC jurisdiction begins from Moti Bagh to CP, our first effort was focused on the corridor along Shanti Path, however, the idea grew. We realised that we can develop a city-wide free wi-fi network using series of hotspots,” said NDMC Chairman Jalaj Srivastava.
The civic agency had earlier invited Expression of interest (EOI) for establishment and maintenance of mesh wi-fi network, however, later it asked the interested parties to assess the feasibility with an appropriate project mix, in a bid to maximise its revenue.
The NDMC then floated Request for Proposal (RFP) including comprehensive structure for CCTV, LED bulbs and wi-fi street poles, offering them as telecom antennas on a rental basis.
