A 24-year-old driver was bludgeoned to death with an iron rod by his helper in central Delhi’s Jhandewalan area on Tuesday night. The incident was a result of a drunken argument over their share of money and the accused was later arrested, said police.
The deceased was identified as Ramesh Chauhan, who drove a goods vehicle for a transport company and usually slept in his vehicle during the night. His body was discovered lying on a pavement near the Videocon Tower on Wednesday morning by a passer-by who called up the police.
Chauhan sustained severe wounds on his head and face. His body was later sent for a post-mortem

A case of murder was immediately registered at the Paharganj police station and soon it emerged that Chauhan was last seen with Umesh Kumar Patel, who worked as a helper in Chauhan’s goods vehicle. Patel also found to be missing since the incident took place. A manhunt was launched and Patel was arrested from Paharganj area later in the day, said the official.
According to the police, Patel and Chauhan had a dispute over sharing some money, which was going on for the past few days and the two had allegedly argued several times over the same. On Tuesday night, both of them got drunk together at a pavement near Videocon Tower and the topic of the disputed share of money re-emerged, leading to a scuffle. During the violent fight, Patel found a <g data-gr-id="53">rod</g> on the road and attacked Chauhan repeatedly on the head and face.
Meanwhile, a head constable and his friend were allegedly assaulted by a group of men after the cop caught one of them stealing his mobile phone in a moving bus in north Delhi here.
The incident took place on Tuesday when the victim, identified as Sachin, a head constable with Delhi Police along with his friend Deepak boarded a Cluster bus at north Delhi’s Netaji Subhash Place around 9:30 am on Tuesday to travel to Kingsway Camp.
“As the bus reached Model Town, Sachin felt his phone slipping out of his pocket. He immediately turned back and saw a youth trying to switch off his mobile. Sachin snatched his phone from the youth. The youth then suddenly pulled out a knife to rest back the phone,” said a senior police official.
Hearing the commotion, Deepak came to his rescue. Three people came in support of alleged thief and thrashed the duo. They then jumped off the bus. When Sachin and Deepak tried to chase them, they threw stones and bricks on the duo and managed to flee toward Azadpur, he added.
A PCR call was made and Sachin and Deepak were taken to a hospital where they were administered
first aid for their minor injuries. A case was registered at Model Town police station based on Sachin’s statement but the assailants are yet to be identified.
Police believe that an organised gang is behind the attack which moves in groups to give cover to the thief and also provide him back up in case he is caught. Some local gangs involved in such robberies are being rounded up by the police in this connection.
