Don’t take people for granted: Sena tells BJP

The warning from the Sena’s mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ came a day after its chief Uddhav Thackeray, after being invited by BJP president Amit Shah, attended the new chief minister’s swearing-in-ceremony at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

The article in ‘Saamana’ reads, ‘The new government is like a newly-wed woman who initially pleases her mother-in-law. In this case the mother-in-law is the people of Maharashtra. You cannot take people for granted. They have the power to pull your ears when you err.’

‘Mantralaya (State Secretariat) was gutted during the Congress-NCP rule but the aspirations of people had turned into ashes much before that. Fadnavis should ensure that his work is like the proverbial Phoenix which rose from the ashes,’ it says.

Amid much pressure from the Sena, BJP started realising that Uddhav had made up his mind to sit in opposition in the Assembly, forcing the BJP to bargain with independents and take the NCP’s
unconditional support.

Sensing a more complex situation in the future while running the government, the BJP leadership on Friday bowed down to ‘Saamana’s continuing critical editorials and in an attempt to reach out to Sena, Fadnavis made five phone calls to Matoshree within a span of five hours on Friday afternoon.

Fadnavis himself called up Uddhav thrice, asking him to attend the swearing-in. In an emotional pitch, he even told Uddhav to attend the oath-taking as it was Balasaheb’s dream to see their government. On Saturday, too, Fadnavis had a word with Uddhav and asked for his cooperation in running the government keeping the sentiments of the people in Maharashtra.

But, while describing the BJP’s big swearing-in ceremony on Friday as grand, the Sena said that the poor, and not the rich, should get the attention of the administration.

‘Fadnavis has said he will emulate Shivaji Maharaj’s example while ruling the state. He should remember that the real strength of Shivaji’s Hindavi Swarajya was not the seth and sahukars but the common poor folk,’ Saamana’s editorial reads.

Meanwhile, Devendra also called Arun Jaitley thrice and Amit Shah once each to take their advice against Shiv Sena’s repeated attack on the state leadership.

With the BJP not responding to the Sena’s offer of swearing in at least two of its MLAs as ministers on Friday, the Sena leadership conveyed to the BJP that the party was not boycotting the grand function. The Sena said that if the BJP refused to budge, it would not hesitate to announce its leader of the opposition.

This is the first lesson the new BJP-led government will have to learn, the Sena said amid signs of a rapprochement between the two parties. Sources said Uddhav has finalised the name of Ravindra Waikar for the post of leader of the opposition if not given a ‘dignified’ post by the BJP.
