Citing Animal Birth Control rules prohibit removal of stray dogs from their territory, former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and other dog lovers in the city moved the Delhi High Court on Wednesday seeking modification of its earlier order for removal of canines from posh Lodhi Garden.
Filing an application before the bench headed by Chief Justice D Murugesan, a group of NGOs and persons, including Gandhi’s NGO People For Animals, claimed the dogs in the garden are not dangerous as they were ‘vaccinated’.
Their Counsel Raj Punjwani said that ‘as per the Animal Birth Control[Dogs] Rules under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the stray dogs can be vaccinated or sterilised and then they would be returned to their own territory but the canines cannot be removed from the area.’
He also said the dogs in the garden were vaccinated and their number has been reduced from 70 to 30 in the last five years.
