Dog flung from roof alive, in search of home

The dog who was flung from a terrace by two medicos in Chennai was rescued by animal welfare activists on Tuesday night.  Five-month-old Bhadra, as she has been named, has sustained fractures in her right hind leg and is undergoing treatment at the government veterinary hospital in Chennai. Though she is still in a state of shock, vets have pronounced her out of danger.

“The police found the puppy on the premises of the house from where she was flung. Neighbours had been feeding her,” said animal welfare activist Shravan Krishnan. Dr R Jayaprakash, director of clinics, TANUVAS, said since the animal was still very young, the injuries would be healed in three to four weeks. “On clinical examination, all her other vitals are normal,” he said.

Since the injuries are consistent with such a fall and the fractures have happened about two weeks ago – the bones have already fused to an extent – vets believe that she is the same puppy who is seen in the video. Bhadra will be fostered by animal welfare activist Jennifer Jacob till she finds a loving permanent home.

Accused medicos held, get bail
Meanwhile, the medical student, who hurled a dog from the terrace, and his friend, who filmed the incident, were arrested on Wednesday, after the shocking video went viral drawing outrage, but the duo was soon released on bail.

“We arrested Gowtham Sudarshan and Ashish Pal today and they were produced before Sriperumbudur Judicial Magistrate court,” Kundrathur Police Inspector Ruban said. “The duo were granted bail by the court,” he said.

Gowtham Sudarshan, a final-year MBBS student of a private medical college, flung the dog from the terrace of a building here and the act was video allegedly recorded by his friend Ashish Pal. After the video went viral, animal welfare activists, including Antony Clement Rubin and Jennifer Jacob, lodged a complaint with police which registered an FIR and launched a search for them.
