Doctors under lot of pressure, it reflects in their work: Jain

Addressing the 57th Annual Convocation at Maulana Azad Medical College, the chief guest of the event, deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and Health minister Satyendar Jain lamented at the system under which even after studying MMBS for five year, students have to sit for another competitive examination for getting into MD. Jain also said that at a time when there are only 55,000 seats of MBBS and 20,000 post graduate seats in the country, the barriers for students pursing medicines must be removed.

Jain said: “Our system is such that doctors are under a lot of stress because of constant studies and tests and this then reflects in their work.” He highlighted the importance of medical community and said that their brightness must not get dimmed due to limitations of the system.

Jain admitted that the system in the government hospitals was weak and required improvement and changes. Jain admitted that even though Delhi hospitals had a total capacity of 10, 000 beds and had buildings which have enough space to accommodate more patients, faulty systems and VIP culture was preventing the hospitals to meet the demands resulting in scenes of confrontation between the doctors and patients.

In providing his list of reforms, Jain said that freeing doctors completely from non-clinical work, fully computerised system, non congestion of hospitals are the major priorities of the government in the next one and a half years.

With regards to preventing congestion from hospitals, Jain said that 1,000 mohalla clinics and 150 polyclinics are been planned. Jain said that presently some primary health centres only have normal staff and no doctors. Thus the emphasis is more on the presence of medical professionals. Citing an example, Jain said that in one of his visit to a primary health centre there was only one doctor but 18 staff members.

Jain also highlighted that reservation for senior resident doctors who have done MBBS from Delhi is being thought upon. Sisodia felicitated the students, alumni and professors with degrees and awards at the convocation ceremony.
