DJB to provide sewer lines, to benefit 10.36 lakh residents

The Delhi Jal Board on Tuesday decided to provide sewer lines at various unauthorised colonies which will benefit almost 10.36 lakh residents of the area. At the 116th Board meeting, the DJB also signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for construction of an eight MGD waste water treatment plants (WWTP) at Delhi Cantonment area. The effluents of the WWTP will be used by residents for non-potable purpose and will save the same amount of drinkable water.
The board also approved the proposal of laying pipeline for water distribution at Swaroop Nagar unauthorised colony with an estimated cost of Rs 4.80 crore. The scheme is likely to be completed in one year and it will benefit about 75,000 residents of the area.
‘A peripheral pipeline for Karala underground reservoir (UGR) was also approved. The project is likely to be finished in one and half years and it will benefit more than two lakh residents of the area,’ the board said in a statement.
A proposal for setting up of the decentralised drinking water plants (water ATMs) was also approved by the board.
‘These decentralised drinking water plants will be set up on 10 resettlement colonies where people are suffering due to acute shortage of drinking water,’ the DJB added.
These areas are Shahbad Daulattpur, Rohini Sector-23 and 26, Metro Vihar Holambi Kalan phase-2, Narela, Bakkarwala, Madanpur Khadar phase-1 and 2 etc in the resettlement colonies. The land for these plants will be provided by Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board.
To prevent wastage of water through damaged pipelines, the board has initiated relocation of major pipelines.
‘A 1,600 meter long pipeline of 1500 mm diameter will be constructed from Janakpuri to Tilak Nagar along with the Outer Ring Road. The project will cost around Rs 6,66,32,676. Another project of Rs 5,48,63,522 was also approved to shift the main water pipeline from to facilitate the construction of elevate corridor from Vikaspuri to Mukarba Chowk,’ the board said. The board also approved three projects for upgradation and strengthening of water pipelines across the city.
