The task force set up by the Aam Aadmi Party government to crack down on the water mafia has swung into action right from the word go. The Delhi Jal Board task force, formed to put a tab on water mafia, on Wednesday carried out raids in the Sangam Vihar and Devli Gaon areas.
The team headed by additional chief executive officer of DJB found that several tube wells had been illegally dug in the area on public land. The water from the tube wells was being supplied to the neighbourhood areas at an exorbitant price of Rs 700 per family.
Delhi Jal Board’s spokesperson Sangam Cheema said that based on the findings of the task force, DJB CEO Vijay Kumar visited the sites along with other senior officials of the Delhi government.
DJB has taken over the possession of the illegal tube wells. Also, the electricity connections of private operators have been removed and DJB has obtained new electricity connections overnight from BSES to operate these tube wells. The operation in this area is likely to last two more days.
The DC’s office has been requested to lodge a complaint against the operators of these illegally installed borewells on public land in Sangam Vihar, who had been operating these borewells and extracting ground water for their commercial interests. A complaint has been lodged under the relevant provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
