DJB promotes use of treated effluent to bridge gap between demand and supply

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is actively promoting the use of treated effluent in order to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of potable water in the city.

‘DJB is also promoting the use of treated effluent, produced by DJB at its Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs), for non-potable purposes, such as irrigation, horticulture, power plants, water bodies, construction activities etc, which will make additional water available for potable purpose,’ said DJB ‘s spokesperson.

In pursuit of this, DJB has recently installed filling points for treated effluent at major WWTPs at Kondli, Rithala, Coronation, Keshopur, Mehrauli and Okhla. Subsequently, DJB has written to a number of government agencies such as PWD, NDMC, EDMC, NTPC and others, encouraging them to use treated effluent.

‘DJB is the only public utility in India that recycles and uses 40 per cent of its treated effluent. This is more than the benchmark of 20 per cent as stated by the Urban Development Norm regarding the extent of recycling treated effluent,’ DJB officer said.

By December 2012, Delhi Jal Board recycled about 142.4 million gallon per day (MGD) of treated effluent and efforts are being made to promote more usage of the treated effluent for non-potable purposes.

The present demand for the use of treated effluent is around 142 MGD by various organizations. A 10 MLD tertiary treatment plant at Okhla is under construction for supply of treated effluent to DTC for bus cleaning/washing and use by industries in the Okhla Industrial Area. This plant is likely to be commissioned by December 2014.
