In a major decision, the 126th board meeting of the Delhi Jal Board decided to waive off water bills pending till November 2015, a decision announced by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on completion of one year in office. The board also approved a new structure of Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) system which does not require borewells besides taking several decisions to improve water distribution networks, water saving and improving sewage networks in the city.
“The benefits of the scheme can be availed from February 15 to August 31 by domestic consumers having functional water meters. All the charges of consumers living in E, F, G and H categories have been waived off while those in A, B, C and D categories have been given 100 per cent relief from late payment surcharge,” said Kapil Mishra, Chairman of DJB.
“Consumers in A and B categories will be given 25 per cent relief, those living in C category will get 50 per cent while 75 per cent exemption will be given to D category areas,” he added.
Informing about the new approved RWH structure, Mishra who also holds the charge of Department of Water, said this particular structure has proved effective in other countries.
The board has also extended the date of installation of the RWH structures to June 30.
As a part of the government agenda to provide piped water to all the citizens of the city and also to cut down the water loss, the Board has decided to launch a simplified scheme to regularise unauthorised water connections. Earlier, for getting an unauthorised water connection regularised, an applicant was required to pay an amount of Rs 20,000. In order to encourage the consumers to go in for authorised water connections, an amount of Rs 500 per connection for domestic and mixed use category cases and Rs 1,500 for commercial/ industrial cases per connection has been approved in place of Rs 3,000 levied earlier as penalty.
