Severe traffic congestion choked several parts of the national Capital on Wednesday evening. Traffic officials say that such jams during peak hours may continue till this weekend.
The Ashram Chowk witnessed severe traffic congestion from 4 pm, and within half-an-hour, the ripple effect of the crisis grasped the entire stretch up to Greater Kailash. Important points that fall within the stretch include Modi Mill flyover, Kalkaji flyover and the Nehru Place junction.
‘I was literally stuck at one point in the Ashram Chowk for half an hour before I could turn towards Mathura Road,’ said a commuter.
He further added while the Ashram Chowk witnessed severe congestion, the flyover towards Ring Road was relatively free.
However, it didn’t last long, as soon the entire Ring Road stretch from Ashram to AIIMS got choked. Lajpat Nagar, Naoroji Nagar (leading to Sarojini Nagar) and South Extension were all very crowded, said a traffic official. As per data acquired from the traffic control room on Wednesday, heavy traffic was also reported from Pragati Maidan around 5 pm, the Pitagarhi Chowk around 6.15 pm, Rohini sector 6 around 7 pm, the entire Mehrauli-Badarpur Road around 7.15 pm, Vikaspuri and the whole Ring Road stretch near Sarai Kale Khan around 7.30 pm.
Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic), Anil Shukla, had earlier this week informed Delhiites of frequent traffic jams because of the festive time till the end of this weekend. He had, however, assured good traffic management and requested people to use the services of Delhi Metro as much as possible.
