Diwali debacle: 50 huts gutted in Shastri Park slum fire

The injured were rushed to the hospital by the locals. No deaths have been reported so from
the incident.

As soon as the fire services department got a call about the incident, fourteen fire tenders were put to action in order to douse the fire, which took more than an hour.

‘The call was received at 10.19 am and fire tenders were rushed to the spot immediately. After the fire was brought under control, a cooling operation was launched at 11.25 am,’ said a fire official.

Soon after the fire was brought under control, the slum-dwellers were seen looking for their belongings from the ashes.

While the exact cause of fire has not been ascertained, the local have alleged that it occurred due to bursting of Diwali crackers by local children.

‘The fire was reportedly caused by firecrackers bursted by children near the slum, which had burnt a heap of wooden planks lying in an open yard adjacent to the slum. It mudy have later transformed into a massive fire,’ said a slum-dweller, whose hut was gutted during the tragic incident.

The officials of Delhi Fire Services have also not ruled out this possibility, but are still trying to find out the exact reason behind the fire.
