District cops to lend hand to traffic police

In an order to control traffic rules’ violation and thwart crimes, the central Delhi police is going to double as traffic police as well.

In the capital, where at least one person dies on roads everyday, three inspectors, including station house officer (SHO) deployed at every police station, will carry the challan book to issue fine to violators. They will not only challan them but also advise them about the correct way of driving on the roads, said sources.

The move is expected to help the traffic police in a big way. This is the first time that district police has taken such an initiative on the police station level. The orders have already been issued in this regard, confirmed a police officer, on the condition of anonymity.

‘Several areas of central district have congested lanes and markets places. Sometimes, it makes it difficult for the traffic police to keep a tab all the drivers,’ said the official.

The inspector deputed at a police station can also check vehicles and issue challans. They are also allowed to chase and challan rule breakers.
