Dissatisfied with services, local train users slam fare hike

Electric multiple unit (EMU) train users have slammed Thursday’s fare hike of 14.2 per cent.
The hike in railway fare means monthly season tickets (MST) or passes used by most on suburban trains will be costlier by about Rs 10 (from Rs 85 to Rs 95) for travel up to 20 km, and by Rs 25 (from Rs 160 to Rs 185) in case of travel between 21 km and 45 km.

Premlata Rai, who works in a shop in Rohtak says that the government should have been a bit more sympathetic towards local passengers. ‘We are a family of two. Both my husband and I use local trains. The fare hike will affect out family budget by Rs 50 on a monthly basis. We would want the move to be revised.’

Commuters are also angry because though the fare has been hiked the services remain dismal in quality. A train was stone-pelted on Thursday because it usually runs late.

‘I have been travelling on the Shahdara-Ghaziabad local for the last 5 years and have seen trains coming an hour late, though the journey is not more than 20 minutes. I am not in favour of the hike,’ said Anindita Das, who works at a parlour in Ghaziabad.
