‘Disgruntled’ Nath hits out at Manmohan Singh

In an unexpected turn of events, veteran Congress leader and former union minister Kamal Nath on Friday said that he had warned former prime minister Manmohan Singh about the 2G spectrum allocations. ‘I wrote to the prime minister and I spoke to him.

I wrote to him saying that there are certain matters of concern and that a committee should be appointed. I do not remember exactly what I wrote, but I did write to him,’ Nath told a television channel. His statement was surprising as Nath is known to be close to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Meanwhile rebutting his claim, his party colleague PC Chacko hit out at Nath saying, ‘Kamal Nath can’t question a policy through a letter.’ Chacko was the chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on 2G scam.

Sources in the party said that Nath is taking on this issue as a personal matter. ‘This is a matter of individual concern as his name was quoted by Vinod Rai,’ sources said. Also there has been a buzz in the party that Nath has been unhappy and has expressed displeasure as his name was not considered by the party for any of the positions like Leader of Opposition or being nominated in any of the parliament committees. In fact his name was earlier sent was Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and then later withdrawn by the party. This indicates the reason why Nath has been irked off late.

Nath in his statement on Singh was reacting to former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai's claim that the Congress veteran had warned the PM about the manner in which 2G spectrum allocations were being made. Rai in his television interview had said, 'I quoted Kamal Nath writing to the prime minister and expressing concerns about the development in the sector. I have written about the finance ministry expressing concerns, I have written about the law ministry expressing concerns. Now, all these things went to the prime minister.’

Meanwhile Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi when asked if Nath was endorsing what Rai had said, explained ‘If you are to distort Mr Kamal Nath statement as equal to Mr Rai statement, you have to rewrite English language — completely wrong. A large number of people have written letters. Mr Kamal Nath — I have read the statement — you may please check with him. He has said nothing of the sort what Mr Rai has said. A lot of people express concern at different points of time. You have to see the dates. What Mr Rai said is complicity, awareness, virtual participation. To suggest that Mr Kamal Nath is anywhere near that set of allegation is wrong.’
