Direct cash plan to get more beneficiaries

Having launched the ambitious Direct Benefits Transfer programme, the government has made changes in rules to allow benefits of schemes other than MNREGA to be deposited in post offices for beneficiaries.

Finance minister P Chidambaram ordered changes in rules after rural development minister Jairam Ramesh pointed out that the particular provision in the Finance Ministry directive, dated 26 August, 2008, defeats the very purpose of the direct benefits transfer initiative, which has been described by him as a game-changer for the UPA government.

According to the amended version of Post Office Savings Account (Amendment) Rules, 2012, the beneficiaries of rural job scheme can have other government benefits like social security pensions and scholarships and ‘deposits’ into their post office savings accounts.
