Diplomatic collusion between Indian, Italian govt, says BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday alleged that Italalian government’s refusal to send back two marines charged with shooting dead two Indian fishermen is nothing but a diplomatic collusion between the Indian and the Italian government.

‘This is betrayal and bluff by the Italian government. It is a breach of trust between two sovereign nations and the act is completely unacceptable. Indian government should take every step to retrieve the fugitives immediately and conduct trial under Indian laws and in Indian courts,’ said  BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

The BJP leader said that the UPA government needs to explain as to why the Italian government is so casual about India.’We have witnessed the same in the Ottavio Quattrochi case and now a similar action where Italian government has virtually challenged India’s highest court,’ said Rudy.

The BJP also charged this is a case of contempt of the Supreme Court. ‘Italy is a democratic country and not a banana republic. The Indian government must prevail upon Italy to hand over the two marines,’ BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.

The marines were permitted by the Supreme Court to go to Italy for four weeks for voting in last month’s election.

Italy on Monday refused to return two of its marines being tried in India for killing two fishermen while on duty aboard a merchant ship. The move caught India by surprise as the marines had been let off once before and had returned.
