Dimple Yadav set to rule over Kannauj

Dimple Yadav, wife of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, is all set to win the Kannauj bye-election after two candidates, who were in the fray, withdrew their nomination on Friday.

District Magistrate of Kannauj and returning officer of the bye-election Selva Kumar J said three candidates Dimple Yadav (Samajwadi Party), Dashrath Shakhwar (Joint Samajwadi Dal) and Ajay Katiyar (Independent) had filed their nominations for the bye-election.

‘Dashrath Shakhwar and Ajay Katiyar have withdrawn their papers, leaving only Dimple Yadav in the fray,’ she said.

Talking to reporters, Katiyar said that he decided to withdraw his name to strengthen the hands of the chief minister. 'I believe Dimple Yadav can serve people better. Therefore, I decided to withdraw from the race,’ he said.

This announcement brought cheers in the Samajwadi Party office where workers distributed sweets.

Legislators made a beeline to congratulate Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in the Vidhan Sabha for the victory of his wife in the bye-election.

Dimple is the first woman from the Yadav clan to enter politics and win a election. The victory for Dimple was a foregone conclusion as there was no serious contest.

The Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party had already announced that no candidates would be fielded in the Kannuaj bye-poll. The BJP candidate had also announced that he wouldn't file his nomination.
