Dikshit teaches school kids to ‘re-use, recycle and reduce’

The Delhi government marked the culmination of its Earth Week 2013 celebrations with a grand carnival on Friday. 5,000 children from across 400 schools in the city gathered to celebrate the event at the residence of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The theme of the celebration was ‘Re-use, Recycle and Reduce’,  which could be seen in the decorations and art installations made of recycled materials such as colourfully painted discarded bottles, wood waste and tubes, that decked up the carnival venue.

Speaking on the occasion, Dikshit said that  nature provides inspiration and teaches people how to smell, taste, listen, recreate, study, identify and express themselves. The Nature Trail  in the Chief Minister’s residence has been instilling in the visitors a spirit of scientific inquiry, enhancing their skills of observation and most importantly creating an understanding of the environment. The Trail enables them to learn about different trees, birds, insects, mammals and their relationships with each other, the chief minister said.

Dikshit added, ‘experiencing nature and learning from it, is one of the best ways of understanding the environment. The Nature Trail is an enriching experience and if accompanied by a knowledgeable interpreter it adds immense value to the exercise.’ Dikshit described the carnival as an effort to create awareness on conservation of the nature amongst children.

Around 5000 children from the eco-clubs of schools across Delhi joined the carnival and spent time expressing their commitment towards the protection of the environment. Education minister Kiran Walia, parliamentary secretary to the chief minister  Mukesh Sharma, secretary (Environment)  Sanjiv Kumar and others were present on this occasion.

The children enjoyed the festivities and learned about the state of the environment in a fun, interactive, and action-oriented way. In addition a book, The Asola Wildlife Sanctuary by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and a poster on The Common Butterflies of Delhi by WWF India were released by the Chief Minister. She also released a book Flora & Fauna at 3, Motital Nehru Place prepared by the environment department.
