Dikshit seeks mindset change to ensure safety for women

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday said that in order to ensure women’s safety in the capital, there is a need to bring a positive change in mindset of the society.
She added that the police can prove helpful in this but they alone cannot change mindsets. ‘With the launch of Awaaz Uthao initiative, the sensitivity of the police has improved a bit,’ she said.
The city government commissioned a round-the-clock Helpline 181 for women in distress.  During its functioning of eight months, it received around two lakh calls.

The service is integrated with Delhi Police and other agencies involved in providing services to women.  She further stated that the efforts of her government resulted in the establishment of five fast-track courts and amendment of the Indian
Penal Code.
The government has also been releasing monthly pension of up to Rs 1,500 per month for widows, separated women and elders.
