Didn’t come in aid of Chadha, JP group: CBI

The CBI has said that a news report published in Millennium Post on 5 June headlined ‘CBI comes in aid of Chadha, JP group’ is inappropriate, and defamatory in  nature as it attempts to lower the credibility of the agency. They further said the news item has spread misinformation.

‘The contents of the news item do not represent an accurate factual position and tend to give a wrong impression to the public. CBI has registered a case against the accused officials of Income Tax Department and others, including the MD, CMD and other functionaries of private company on allegations of alleged bribery. Director (Investigation); Additional Director (Investigation); Assistant Commissioner & Inspector, all of Income Tax Department; the MD of a private firm and the Chartered Accountant of Kanpur were arrested during the course of investigation. The instant case has no linkage with the Income Tax probe against the two real estate groups of Uttar Pradesh as mentioned in your news item. The CBI’s investigations are always based solely on hard evidence and are thoroughly professional and impartial and have time and again stood the test of legal scrutiny and public faith. It is further clarified that Director (Investigation) of Income Tax, Kanpur arrested in CBI case, has not conducted or got conducted raids during 2010 or till date in respect of said two real estate groups of Uttar Pradesh, as confirmed by senior officers of Income Tax.’

In our story we had said the sudden arrest of a commissioner of investigations, Income Tax Department, Kanpur range, Kunal Singh, the joint director of investigations Ratan Singh and two other IT officials has raised eyebrows in the finance ministry circles.

The IT commissioner in question – Kunal Singh – was supposedly arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) for taking bribe from an infamous builder. Kunal Singh was the brain behind the investigations against the businessman Ponty Chadha and the JP group. People have alleged that the CBI is being used to stall probe against the two powerful real estate groups of Uttar Pradesh.

This case is being handled by CBI Joint Director, Prabodh Kumar, who belongs to Punjab cadre and DIG in-charge is Satish Golcha from UT cadre.
