Millennium Post has learnt that Abhishek Verma was a close friend of Gopal Goyal Kanda since the past few years. Verma used to frequently visit Kanda’s casino in Goa.
‘Verma was willing to buy Kanda’s casino at any cost. To make Kanda ready for this deal, Verma used to spend maximum time at the casino. He even became friendly with the casino’s staff,’ said a source, who was a former employee with MDLR.
Abhishek Verma is a businessman who has been booked in the navy war room leak case. Earlier, the arms dealer was booked for allegedly writing a letter to the Prime Minister on a forged letterhead of then Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken seeking easing of business visa norms in 2009.
The CBI had registered a case against Verma under the section 469 of the Indian Panel Code that relates to forgery for the purpose of harming reputation.
The Casino Mint Goa is owned by Kanda, who has been booked for abetting her former air-hostess, Geetika for suicide. Nupur Mehta was the senior vice-president of the casino while Ankita Singh, who is alleged to be Kanda’s paramour was the manager of the casino.
The casino is a fast boat converted into a floating gambling place Casino Mint, known for its ambiance and style. It offers popular gaming activities including Baccarat, Blackjack, Roulette, Miniflush, Poker, Flush and Marriage. This multideck floating casino has an international restaurant and bar with customer care services.
IS DELHI POLICE GOING SOFT ON KANDA?
A day after Ankita Singh was said to reach the national capital and be questioned by the Delhi Police, the latter took a complete U-turn from their statement regarding Ankita’s arrival. Even Nupur Mehta, a Bollywood starlet, who was the senior vice-president of MDLR’s casino in Goa, was to be questioned, but the Delhi police failed to approach her as well.
Both Ankita Singh and Nupur Mehta are not directly related to Geetika Sharma’s suicide. But the duo allegedly knows many details about the relationship of Geetika and Kanda. Earlier, Shweta Singh (Ankita’s sister), along with few senior police officials, told media persons that they had a word with her and Ankita informed them that she will soon join the investigation. When P Karunakaran, additional commissioner of police (North-West), was contacted, he said: ‘ I have no idea about Ankita. As far as her being interrogated in this case is concerned, we have not sent her any legal notice regarding the same.’
Ankita is allegedly a key witness in the Geetika Sharma suicide case as she was close to Geetika as well as Kanda. The suicide note recovered by the Delhi police from Geetika’s residence in Ashok Vihar alleged that Ankita is having an illicit relationship with Kanda and also has a child with him.
Few days back, Millennium Post had also revealed the Goa connection of Geetika and Ankita. After which, a team of Delhi police reached Panaji police station in Goa to collect further information about an FIR lodged by Geetika against Ankita and Nupur Mehta allegedly for stealing her laptop and mobile phone.
On Monday, Geetika’s family members were called to the Ashok Vihar police station. Geetika’s brothers, Ankit Sharma, Gaurav Sharma and her mother Anuradha Sharma reached the police station mid-noon and were let off after a couple of hours.
VERMA, WIFE REMANDED IN JUDICIAL CUSTODY
Businessman Abhishek Verma and his wife, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case, were on Monday remanded in judicial custody for two weeks by a Delhi court.
ED sleuths produced Verma and his Romanian wife Anca Maria Neascu before the court after expiry of four days of police custody and the court remanded them in judicial custody till September 10 after the probe agency said that they were not required for further custodial interrogation.
“Both the accused are remanded in judicial custody till September 10,” Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Gautam Manan said.
Verma and his wife were arrested on 22 August by the ED after they had moved an application to surrender in the case.
The ED had earlier told the court that the case is having “wide international ramifications” and the probe in the case registered under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) is going on.
ED had said that Verma and his wife were involved in the money laundering case of very high magnitude “running into crores of rupees”.
During the hearing, ED’s prosecutor Naveen Kumar Matta moved an application and said that both the accused should be remanded in judicial custody as they have interrogated them.
The ED had registered a money laundering case against the couple for allegedly receiving money from a Swiss defence firm to keep it out of the Indian government’s blacklist.
