Did fellow Tihar inmate kill Delhi gang rape accused?

As controversies rage over the mysterious death of Delhi gang rape prime accused, Ram Singh, in Tihar Jail on Monday, the needle of suspicion points at fellow Tihar inmate, Amit Shukla, in case Singh’s death happens to be murder and not suicide. Shukla is the prime accused in the high-profile murders of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan and MNC employee Jigisha Ghosh. Ram Singh was found hanging in his cell at Tihar Jail on Monday morning and his family and lawyer have claimed foul play in the death.

In a recent edition of Millennium Post, dated 14 February, the paper had revealed a conspiracy to kill Ram Singh and the other accused in the 23-year-old paramedical student’s gang rape, either in Tihar Jail or at Saket Court. Shukla is one of the suspects behind Ram Singh's mysterious death, as he had made a conspiracy earlier to kill the five accused.

A few days back Delhi police had taken Shukla’s  voice sample and after 33-year-old Singh’s mysterious death in prison, Shukla is back in the circle of suspicion, specially since Singh’s family and lawyers have refused to believe that the rape-accused committed suicide. The two have also blamed the authorities of keeping them in the dark about Singh’s death, alleging that they only got to know of it, after media contacted them for their reaction to the death.

Millennium Post had earlier revealed, that according to a highly-placed source in the Delhi Police special cell, a mobile phone used by Shukla in jail had been kept on surveillance for approximately a month. ‘Call records in this period show that two numbers were frequently contacted from his phone. When these numbers were traced, it was found that one of them belonged to 27-year-old Arun Kumar, a compounder at Tihar jail and the user of the other number lives in Mumbai. His identity has been withheld,’ said the source. A high level of security had been provided for five of the six accused in the case, who have been put in Tihar Jail, after they were beaten up by other inmates at the prison.

In February, after the police Special Cell got the information about Shukla's conspiracy to kill the accused, a production warrant was issued to interrogate him. During interrogation, he had revealed a few details of the conspiracy to kill the gang rape accused, including Ram Singh.
