Dhoti bill passed in Tamil Nadu assembly

Tamil Nadu assembly has passed a bill to lift ban on wearing of dhoti and other Indian traditional dress while visiting certain clubs in the city. The bill was introduced CM J Jayalalithaa following the controversy over denial of entry to a dhoti-clad HC judge into TNCA club.

The bill makes stringent provisions for cancellation of licence and punishment of one year imprisonment for any violation. The bill states no recreation club, association, trust, company or society shall make any rule, regulation or bye-law, imposing restriction on entry to any person wearing a ‘veshti’ reflecting Indian culture or any other Indian traditional dress into any public place under its control or management.
