Dhoni to play in IPL-7; Gavaskar named interim chief

The court also ordered senior most vice-president and former spinner Shivlal Yadav should take care of BCCI’s non-IPL affairs.

A bench of justices AK Patnaik and FM Ibrahim Kalifulla, which on Thursday proposed barring CSK and RR from playing in IPL-7, refused to pass the order in this regard on Friday, allowing the under-fire franchises to compete along with the six other teams. The bench said since IPL-7 was scheduled for 16 April, it has to pass interim orders to ensure that all those who love the game continue to watch cricket in the tournament and the matches are played in accordance with IPL rules.

Hailing SC’s decision to not suspend CSK and RR, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said the order was in the best interest of the game and its fans. ‘We have no objection to the SC order. The good thing is all eight teams will play in this year’s IPL which will go on without hindrance,’ Shukla said.
‘We told the court that at this juncture, especially since everything is unverified, we could not stop any team from playing in IPL-7,’ CA Sundaram, one of the board’s lawyers, told mediapersons after the court hearing, adding, ‘It would have affected the tournament as well as millions of cricket-loving public. We are very happy the court has not passed any order which would have interrupted the tournament.’

BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel, who is part of the IPL governing council, said the board already has a set up in place for running IPL and the only question which needs to be sorted out is the role of IPL COO Sundar Raman. ‘The only issue is whether Gavaskar would like the services of Sundar Raman,’ Patel said. Commenting on his installation as the interim BCCI chief, Gavaskar said he was honoured to be given the responsibility and will ‘give it his best shot’. ‘I am deeply humbled and honoured that SC has entrusted me with the job of being the interim president of BCCI till the end of IPL-7. Like with my cricket, I will give it my best shot,’ he said. The court said Gavaskar will not work as a commentator during the interim period and will be adequately compensated by the board for the loss of income.
