DGP Purkayastha gets two-year extension

The tenure of state Director General of Police (DGP) Surajit Kar Purkayastha has been extended till May 31, 2018. The state government issued an order on Friday “in compliance of order of Honourable Supreme Court on India on June 22, 2006 in Writ Petition (Civil) 310 of 1996 that the Director General and Inspector General of Police, West Bengal shall hold office for not less than two years irrespective of his date of retirement on superannuation”.
It may be mentioned that in the same press note it has been stated that “the state government has issued an order today (Friday) stating that Purkayastha, who had taken over the charge of DGP on May 31, 2016, shall hold the office till March 31, 2018.” It may be mentioned that Purkayastha, 1985 batch IPS officer, has become the Director General of Police on May 31, 2016.
Purakayastha, an Electrical Engineer from IIT Kharagpur, who has served in various key posts, beginning his career as the SDPO of Bolpur in Birbhum, was scheduled to retire in December 31, 2016. With Friday’s order, he would remain in the post till May 2018.
