According to the latest data available at SAANJHI, the official website of Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, finance minister Arun Jaitley, human resource development minister Smriti Irani, and minister of state for drinking water and sanitation Ram Kripal Yadav among others have not yet identified any village to develop it into ultra modern hamlet.
Other political stalwarts who have not acted on the matter are Samajwadi chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Congress president Sonia Gandhi as well as Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi. Incidentally, prominent Samajwadi Party leader Dimple Yadav, the daughter-in-law of SP chief Mulyam Singh Yadav, has adopted Saidpur Sakri village.
Till Tuesday, which was the last date for identifying a village, only 364 members out of total 793 MPs of both the houses together had managed to adopt a village each. A total of 294 Lok Sabha MPs out of 543 have selected villages, while only 70 Rajya Sabha MPs out of 250, have showed their interest in prime minister’s pet project. Following poor response from members of parliament, the government has extended the last date of village adoption by one more week, the sources at rural development ministry said.
Parliamentarians of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have shown better response than others. In all, 48 (60 per cent) and 32 (80 per cent) MPs have so far participated in the SAANJHI programme from UP and Bihar respectively. UP has total 80 MPs, while Bihar has the strength of 40 Lok Sabha members.
While in Uttarakhand, only Bhagat Singh Koshyari has submitted the name of adopted Sarpuda village under Khatima block in Uddham Singh Nagar district and in Jharkhand, its JMM chief Sibu Soren, who has showed faith in Modi’s movement.
