DERC postpones meeting with BSES discoms till Tuesday

Following the Supreme Court intervention on Friday that averted a power crisis in Delhi, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has postponed the meeting to be held with the BSES discoms on payment issues till Tuesday.

The Reliance-owned discoms BSES Rajdhani and BSES Yamuna Power Limited were summoned by the regulator last Thursday to give an explanation on how they plan to pay National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) by 10 February.

Meanwhile, the regulator has also asked the government to set up an empowered committee with representatives from both discoms and governments to look into the financial issues of the power companies.

The companies had sought time to reply till Saturday, which has now been postponed again. The regulator has also asked the government to expedite the setting up of the empowered committee so that any issues regarding finances could be discussed in a more transparent manner.

Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission recommended that this committee should meet every 15 days.

The two private firms, along with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited had come into being in 2002 when the then Delhi government decided to privatise power distribution.

Delhi discoms are a 51:49 per cent joint venture between private companies and Delhi government.
