Dengue menace: North civic body suspends doctor, malaria inspector

Heads have begun to roll in municipal corporations owing to the civic bodies’ inability to prevent the alarming rise in the number of dengue cases in the national capital.

In a first of its kind development, the commissioner of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), P K Gupta, on Tuesday suspended a doctor and malaria inspector for failure to discharge their duties. The commissioner has also cancelled leaves of all medical and paramedical staff till the disease comes under control.

‘In view of the rising number of dengue cases, deputy health officer (DHO) and inspector (dengue and malaria) of Rohini zone have been suspended with immediate effect. The leaves of all medical and paramedical staff of all the polyclinics have been cancelled,’ PK Gupta said. The action, according to the commissioner was taken after Rohini zone registered the highest number of dengue cases in the past week.

As per reports, out of 1,193 dengue cases registered in the city till 23 September, 429 were from the North DMC area, of which, 218 were from the Rohini zone. This was approximately three times the number in the Karol Bagh zone, which registered the second highest number of cases in the NDMC area. There were 73 cases of dengue in the Karol Bagh zone.

Additional commissioner (health) of North DMC, Mayank Sharma said that outdoor and indoor fogging has been intensified in Rohini and other zones to control the spread of this mosquito-borne disease. ‘We will deploy two mobile dispensaries in Shahbad Daulatpur and one each in Buddh Vihar and Kirari from Wednesday to provide diagnosis and treatment facilities in the most affected areas,’ said Sharma.

He further added that the number of beds have been increased in Hindu Rao and Kasturba Gandhi hospitals for dengue patients.
