The mosquito-borne disease dengue claimed the first casualty of the season in Delhi on Saturday morning, with the death of a 38-year-old man in Lok Nayak Hospital. According to civic bodies, four new suspected cases of dengue were reported on Saturday.
As one person had already died due to dengue during the first half of the year, the toll has now reached to two.
‘The victim, identified as Rizwan, was in the very advanced stage of the disease. He was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday, and declared dead around 7 am on Saturday,’ said Y S Maan, director [Press and Information] of north and east Delhi Municipal Corporations.
Rizwan succumbed to the disease due to very low blood platelet count and his blood vessels had also ruptured, resulting in huge blood loss. ‘Had he approached us a little earlier, he could have been saved. But he was admitted here at a very advanced stage of infection,’ said a senior doctor at the hospital.
As per the records of the Dengue Nodal Centre of the civic bodies, four new suspected cases were reported on Saturday, of which two were from Central zone, and one each from south Delhi and Karol Bagh area.
So far, 68 confirmed cases have been reported in the city, among which three were from the neighbouring states and 65 were residents of Delhi. Health officers of Dengue Nodal Centre, however, maintained that the situation was better than last year, as in the same duration, 222 cases were reported in Delhi. On the other hand, in 2009, only 30 cases were reported and nobody had died.
‘The hospitals are well -equipped to deal with such cases and regular monitoring and fumigation is being carried out in high-risk areas, besides various awareness campaigns,’ said Maan.
Another mosquito-borne disease, Chikungunya, is also spreading slowly but surely in the capital. In all, six cases of Chikungunya have been reported, of which two are from Delhi and three from neighbouring states.
