Delhi’s well-heeled in south zone prefer to pay taxes manually

Residents of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (South DMC)’s south zone, slotted under the elite category, were however lag behind when it comes to online property tax submission.

According to the property tax department, least number of people paid property taxes through online from the south zone when compared to the other zones of the local civic body.

‘The number of manual property tax depositors is more than the number of online property tax depositors in south zone, while in other three  zones the number of online property tax depositors is more,’ said B K Singh, assessor and collector, property tax department of South DMC.

Among the four zones, west zone records the maximum with 89,701 people depositing Rs 26.16 crore through online. The area includes Punjabi Bagh, Rajouri Garden, Tilak Nagar, Uttam Nagar, Tagore Gardenand and Subhash Nagar. Here 39,117 property owners preferred manual system to deposit Rs 37.16 crore as property tax.

In south zone, which includes the posh areas of New Friends Colony, Safdarjung Enclave, Hauz Khas,  Vasant Vihar, and R K Puram, only 34,841 people deposited their property tax, which amounted Rs 38.44 crore, while 35,269 deposited their property tax amounting to Rs 66.34 crore manually.

The maximum online collection of property tax was Rs 53.67 crore from 60,892 property owners in central zone, which includes areas like Daryaganj, Amar Colony, Greater Kailash, Nizamuddin, Lajpat Nagar, Sarita Vihar, Kalkaji, Andrews Gunj and C R Park. Here 50,921 property owners deposited property tax worth Rs 98.16 crore manually.

The minimum collection of around Rs 38 crore was from Najafgarh zone, a predominantly village area except Dwarka sub city. Here 52,888 people used online medium while 32,932 persons deposited their property tax manually.

‘We have offered two percent rebate in the current financial year on online deposition of the property tax to promote online users,’ informed Rajesh Gehlot, Chairman of Standing Committee in South DMC. The corporation collected a record Rs 620 crore of property tax in 2012-13 of which Rs 134.85 crore were through online.

‘There is an overall increase of 60 per cent in online submission of property tax but we are committed to make it more user friendly,’ added Gehlot.
