Delhiites get respite from sticky heat, no major jams reported

The much-awaited monsoon has arrived in the national Capital, providing respite to residents from the scorching and sticky heat.

It’s a known fact that after a slight spell of showers, many stretches get water-logged and traffic bottlenecks are reported from across the city. But Delhiites enjoyed a pleasant Sunday as no major snarls were  reported.

However, they are slightly worried as the Meteorological department has forecast heavy rain this week, which might cause severe traffic bottlenecks.

Residents woke up to pleasant Sunday as the maximum temperature dropped to 32.4 degrees Celsius and the minimum at 27.2 degrees Celsius.

According to the traffic police department, no massive snarls were reported in the city on Saturday and Sunday as vehicular movement was comparatively less. “However, there were reports of water-logging because of which traffic movement was slow, but no major traffic jam was reported,” a senior police official said.

Monsoon arrived in Delhi on Saturday. The monsoon has once again exposed the poor preparedness of the authorities concerned as several potholes could be spotted on major roads. Water-logging in various areas was another reason that had spoiled the mood of commuters, specially in Eastern Range that includes East Delhi and North-East Delhi.

However, a senior traffic police official claimed that sufficient arrangements have been made by the traffic department to ensure the convenience of commuters. Policemen have been deployed in areas that are prone to water-logging. Such areas include Nehru Place, Moolchand, Lajpat Nagar, South Extension, Preet Vihar and  Geeta Colony, among others.

Also, traffic signals are being examined. Usually, traffic lights stop functioning during rain. “Soon, we will get a report about non-functioning traffic signals. Traffic police will be rushed to areas to manage vehicular movement where the lights are out of order,” the official said.
