A 22-year-old man was killed and four of his friends were injured when their speeding car rammed into a tree at GT Karnal Road in outer Delhi on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Hemant, who was sitting on the front seat. His friend Nishchay (19), who was driving the car, was critically injured.
The occupants in the back of the car, identified as Naman, Nakul, and Kajal, also sustained some injuries, but are said to be out of danger.
All the injured are said to belong to different colleges. According to police, the accident took place around 10 am on Tuesday, when the four youth were on their way to Delhi University.
Eyewitnesses told police that the Alto car was being driven at a very high speed.
When the car reached GT Karnal road, it came very close to another vehicle. Thinking that their car would collide with the vehicle, Nishchay tried to manoeuvre the car out of a possible collision. However, he ended up crashing it into a tree on the side of the road.
Eyewitnesses at the spot then called up the Police Control Room and the injured were rushed to Harish Chandra Hospital, where Hemant was declared dead on arrival.
Nishchay sustained critical injuries and was referred to the Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, while the other were sent to a local hospital in Dwarka after which their respective families were informed. Police said that the youth were driving towards Delhi University at the time of the accident and added that primary investigation does not indicate that any of the victims were drunk.
However, cops are waiting for medical reports for confirmation.
"Hemant's body has been sent for post-mortem. CCTV footage from the area is being checked to see if any other vehicle was involved in the accident.
A case under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and the matter is being investigated. The damaged vehicle has been seized for inspection,"a senior police official said.
Meanwhile, in a case of road rage in the national Capital, a youth was brutally assaulted by a group of men at the Sarita Vihar stretch of Mathura Road on Monday after his car brushed against a bike when he tried to avoid hitting a pedestrian.
The victim, identified as Virendra Pakhare, is undergoing treatment. The suspects in the case are yet to be arrested. The incident occurred around 10 pm when Pakhare was driving his car to H-Pocket Market near a Delhi Jal Board office.
While trying to keep a safe distance from a pavement, he moved slightly to his right and ended up brushed against a bike.
The infuriated biker then intercepted a car and made a few phones calls after which four men joined him. The group then assaulted Pakhare, after which he was shifted to AIIMS Trauma centre. Based on his statement, a case of assault, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and common intention was registered.
