Youth admitted for lung infection dies in hospital

Gurugram: Another incident of alleged medical negligence has been reported from a private Gurugram hostpial, where a 21-year-old man died after being admitted for treatment of a lung infection.

After being admitted to Paras Hospital on February 19, Deepak, a resident of Manesar, died two days later in the hospital.

While doctors claimed that he died of a heart failure, Deepak's family asserted that he did not have any heart ailments.

A police complaint was filed at Sector-43 by Deepak's brother Sandeep, who demanded the district authorities to not only cancel the medical licences of the guilty doctors but also to try them for criminal negligence.

On Thursday, relatives of the deceased blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway, demanding that the district police arrest the culprits.

Senior police officials of the rank of DCP and ACP were reached the spot to placate the protestors.

Over the past few months, serious allegations have been levelled against the hospital – located in Sushant Lok area – of gross medical misconduct, which has jeopardised the life of patients. Some of these cases are being investigated by the Gurugram Health department.

The latest case comes after a horrifying incident where one Rajendra Singh filed a complaint at Palam Vihar police station against Columbia Asia Hospital.

He accused the hospital staff of gross negligence, which resulted in loss of life of his 67-year-old mother Savitri Singh.

The Haryana government, on its part, has often claimed that lack of an effective law against erring private hospitals has tied its hands against taking action against them.

After the death of a seven-year-old girl at Fortis Hospital last year, Gurugram residents who have been victims of medical malpractice have been vociferously demanding action private hospitals.

There have been numerous private hospitals where shocking incidents of negligence and apathy have been reported.

On November 22 last year, 12-year-old Prateek, admitted at Park Hospital, died under mysterious circumstances, with his family alleging that he died of negligence.

The chief medical officer is currently investigating the matter.

Paras Hospital was in troubled water earlier as well, for a botched up surgery that resulted in a 24-year-old being shifted to ventilator support.

Another incident was reported at Shiva Hospital, where two staff members had molested a minor patient who was admitted in the ICU of the hospital. Even after the two culprits were arrested, there was clamour by the public to take stringent action against the hospital.
