Hit-and-run cases involving high-end cars continue unabated, as in yet another case, a Mercedes car hit a 50-year-old pedestrian at Moti Bagh Chowk in South Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. The accused driver fled the spot after hitting the victim and is yet to be traced. The police have managed to ascertain the registration number of the vehicle and are investigating the case.
According to a senior police official, the incident took place around 4.30 pm. The victim, Dasrath Yadav, who is said to be a labourer, was returning home from work and was about to cross a road, when a speeding Mercedes traveling through the road towards Vasant Vihar hit Yadav.
The Mercedes car driver instead of helping the labourer, managed to flee from the spot leaving an injured Yadav behind. "We received a PCR call at around 5 pm on Tuesday regarding a road accident in Moti Bagh area. We sent in a team to investigate the case and found Yadav lying on the road with serious injuries. We shifted him to Safdarjung hospital where he is recovering from his injuries," said Additional Commissioner of Police, (South), Chinmoy Biswal.
The police could not ascertain the sequence of events from Yadav as he is currently unconscious and are waiting to record his statement. The police are also looking for CCTV footages of the incident but have managed to get crucial leads in the case as they have the registration number of the vehicle.
The police have claimed that the number belongs to the state of Uttar Pradesh and that the driver had recently bought the car as the number plate was a temporary one.
"We have the temporary registration number of the vehicle and believe that the owner may be aresident of Noida. We are planning to approach various Mercedes showrooms in Noida area to ascertain the list of new buyers," said a senior police official.
In the meantime, the police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving in South Campus police station. "We have registered the FIR on the statement of ASI Shashi Bhushan under Section 279/337 of the IPC. We will soon apprehend the accused," the officer added.
This is the second hit-and-run incident involving a Mercedes car, as on Sunday, a 17-year-old student of Bal Bharti Public school was killed in an accident involving a Mercedes car in Outer Delhi's Paschim Vihar area.
The boy was traveling on a scooty and was on his way home when he met with the accident. The police are yet to trace the identity of the accused and have to rely on broken pieces of the vehicle to trace the owner of the errant vehicle.
