Workers' union plans rally against Maruti violence verdict

The workers' union and various vendor units in the city have denounced the Gurugram District Court's decision to sentence 13 Maruti workers for life imprisonment.

13 Maruti workers were held guilty by the Gurugram District Court in the murder of Awanish Kumar Dev, General Manager (Human Resources), during the incident of violence in Maruti factory in Manesar on July 18, 2012.

In support of the 13 workers, the workers' union plan to hold a protest march on March 23.

With March 23 observed as the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, the workers union have chosen Wednesday to hold a march and register their protest against the verdict.

"Most of our workers have been wrongly charged. The management wants to make sure that the workers union remains weak and therefore our workers have been falsely indicted. For their support, we plan to hold a protest," said Kuldeep Jhangu of Maruti Udyog workers' union.

"We also demand that those workers who have been recently released should be adequately compensated and should also be provided employment," added Jhangu.
