Women of Shaheen Bagh continue fight against CAA
NEW DELHI: Demonstration at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens for Citizens (NRC) on Sunday entered its 90th day, with protesters asserting they will not budge till the laws are not taken back.
Even as the threat of Coronavirus has created a panic in the whole city, the women have refused to move, and are however taking precautions to fight the
pandemic. "Sanitizers and masks are being used, while we are making sure that the area is hygienic," said Shahid, an organizer at Shaheen Bagh.
The protesters have said they do not fear the virus, but will take all precautions necessary. Even as the government has been advising people to avoid large gatherings and crowded places, while schools, colleges, cinemas have been closed and events are being postponed, the protestors have refused to budge. "We sat here when the rains came, slept in bone chilling cold, we will be able to fight this as well," said Parveena, a protester. Many assumed the protest would go low key after Delhi was hit with riots and Coronavirus. The crowd has thinned down, however, on Sunday scores of people joined the protest.
"We are more determined than ever. This movement has seen so much and how communities were targetted in Delhi recently, we know the fight has to keep going on. It can't end and the government has to take back the bill," said Razia who had come to join the protest from Jamia Millia Islamia.
The protest at Shaheen Bagh has been taken over by the women in the area, this also inspired similar protests in
different part of Delhi and even India. And even as people in the North East part of Delhi are trying to rebuild their lives from the horrors of the violence that recently hit them, women of Shaheen Bagh have refused to move down.
