Woman killed, five injured in separate road mishaps

New Delhi: A 45-year-old woman died after being hit by a speeding car in north east Delhi's Welcome area on Sunday, with Delhi Police stating that they have seized the offending car and started investigation to nab the accused.

The incident came to light on Sunday morning after a PCR call was made to the cops from a passersby in the area, after which a police team was rushed to the spot. The woman was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Police said the woman was identified as Omwati, a resident of the same area. They said that she used to visit a temple every day and return home on time. However, on Sunday morning, she did not return home, and her worried family started looking for her, and soon came to know of the accident.

Sources said Omwati was walking on one side of the road, when the car suddenly came from one of the lanes, hit a pole and then hit the woman. The car then overturned, slid on the road and then came to a halt.

A case has been registered at Welcome police station and investigations has started.

In another road mishap, five members of a family who were travelling in cab were injured after a speeding car which was coming from the wrong side hit the cab in west Delhi's Madipur area, on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

Police said that the offending car was being driven by an intoxicated 30-year-old female college student, who has been arrested.

As per Delhi Police date, the first four months of this year have witnessed more than 1,000 road accidents, in which more than 400 persons lost their lives.
